Seniors look at changes to aged care

Oxley Home Care was featured in ‘The Manly Daily’ on Saturday February 24, 2017, discussing how seniors now have the power to choose their aged care provider in national reforms implemented on Monday February 27, 2017.

As Oxley Home Care recently reported, more than 1.3 million Australians received aged care last year. Approximately 82 per cent of those people who received aged care, received it in the home. That’s according to Noel Whittaker, Co-Author of ‘Aged Care, Who Cares?’

As of March 2017, Sydney’s elderly now have the power to compare and choose their home care provider and change their provider at any time, as a result of landmark reforms to the Australian aged care industry. Funding for Home Care Packages* will now be allocated to the care recipient and follow them to their chosen provider.

The reforms are the result of the Australian Government Productivity Commission’s 2011 Inquiry, which found that the Australian aged care system suffers key weaknesses, including numerous regulations, lack of timely access to care and limited consumer choice.

These changes will create much needed competition and transparency in the home care marketplace, especially given that in the coming years the number of Home Care Packages available will increase by nearly 30,000.

Fraser Douglass, Managing Director at Oxley Home Care says it’s an exciting time to be a provider in the aged care sector as the changes will promote competition and innovation in service providers.

“We're very excited for the next stage of growth the industry is about to embark on and believe the Federal Government’s recent reforms to home care will have a significant positive impact on Australian seniors,” Fraser Douglass says.

Eligibility for a Home Care Package will be determined by the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT), as it was previously. The assessment can be undertaken in your home or at the ACAT offices and is free and simple.

The second stage of the reforms will include the integration of the Home Care Packages Program and the Commonwealth Home Support Program into a single care at home program, simplifying the way that services are delivered and funded to seniors, from July 2018.
