Living well with dementia…

Did you know that September 2016 was Dementia Awareness Month? The campaign was conducted by Alzheimer’s Australia and was all about encouraging Australians to become aware of dementia and to have a greater understanding of what it’s like to live with dementia.

As part of the campaign, a ‘Living Well with Dementia’ two-day conference was held in Sydney. It gave Oxley Home Care’s Case Managers – Leanne Hamer and Kathie Broadbridge – the opportunity to listen to key-note speakers provide advice and strategies on how dementia is being managed in Australia both now and in the future.

A discussion paper was released at the seminar that outlined major changes in attitude to dementia in the Australian home care industry, with much focus being placed on empowering people with dementia.

Sharon Lawrence, a Senior Commonwealth Support Program Dietitian discussed the importance of a healthy diet in reducing stress in everyday life and the impact that food can have on our cognitive abilities. She advocated that a healthy diet, adequate exercise and social activities should be maintained for as long as possible, especially by those with dementia.

Tim Henwood, Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences demonstrated how regular and sustained physical exercise can assist with improving the cognitive abilities of people with dementia. In support of Tim Henwood’s assertions, Trevor Crosby gave a first-hand account of how his Early Onset Dementia diagnosis affected him and his supporting family and the daily challenges that he faces. By filling his week with physically and mentally challenging activities, including cricket, sailing, yoga, golf, bridge and bowls, he is ensuring that he’ll prolong his current quality of life.

Oxley Home Care offers tailored, early intervention and health and lifestyle coaching to people with dementia. Each person assisted is treated as an individual with their own history, memories and likes/dislikes taken into consideration.

Oxley Home Care’s support services for people with dementia and their carers include:

•         Personal care, showering, dressing, grooming, dental hygiene and denture care
•         Preparing and serving of meals
•         Daily living support, including domestic assistance
•         Transport to social events
•         Shopping and errands
•         Companionship and leisure activities.
Oxley Home Care’s respite support allows carers of people with dementia to rest and re-energise with peace of mind, on a regular basis.
