Being independent and staying in their own homes for as long as possible is the wish of many older Australians.
Anja Hauenschild, an Occupational Therapist and Account Manager for Independent Living Specialists say ILS provides assistance aids such as wheelchairs, ramps, rails and equipment to assist with day to day activities, such as washing and dressing to assist clients to be as independent as possible.
Ms Hauenschild says ILS will help people in their showrooms or sometimes come to a client’s house to carry out an assessment for equipment – one based on watching clients undertake a task, and one which is an activity analysis – ascertaining which barriers stop people doing a task independently and safely.
Ms Hauenschild says assessments are completed in a showroom or the home of the client and their specific equipment needs are identified.
“Our role as Occupational Therapists at Independent Living Specialists (ILS) is to help people to engage in day-to-day activities, assessing what they can do independently, determining their goals and ascertaining the barriers that exist to achieving these, so that they can engage in their local community and in their life roles,” she says.
“A big part of my role is to speak to the client and find out what their goals are – whether they have an illness or disease or ongoing condition they are living with and the activities that they find difficult to complete independently. Our work is very client centred, with the goals being client-led.”
During her assessment, Ms Hauenschild looks for things such as pressure injuries that occur as a result of reduced blood flow to certain areas of the body and are likely to have happened due to the person being less mobile than previously.
She also suggests that clients attend the ILS showroom so that they can try first-hand specifically tailored equipment to help them with their needs. For example – trialling a lift chair to assist in moving from a seated position.
Ms Hauenschild and her ILS colleagues will work in conjunction with Oxley Home Care, helping their clients modify their homes in order to make their lives easier.
“For Oxley Home Care, we have installed grab rails for a client in their lounge room, bathroom transfer equipment and toilet rails to assist clients with standing,” she says. “We have also assisted in choosing an appropriate mattress for a client, so they have reduced likelihood of falling out of bed.”
