Dementia is second leading cause of death of Australians…

The number of deaths in Australia from dementia, including Alzheimer’s Disease, has increased by 68 per cent over the past decade while other leading causes of death, such as heart disease, stroke and other circulatory conditions have decreased over the same period.

According to the Causes of Death 2017 Report released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics last month, deaths from dementia have increased from 33.1 deaths per 100,000 people in 2008 to 41.6 in 2017.

Leading cause of death of women

Dementia is now Australia’s second leading cause of death overall and the leading cause of death of women. Dementia, including Alzheimer’s Disease most predominantly affected females, with 55 male deaths for every 100 female deaths.

“Over the past decade, the number of deaths from heart disease has decreased for both sexes, while dementia deaths have increased. Females account for 64.5 per cent of dementia deaths,” the Causes of Death 2017 Report stated.

“With more than 436,000 Australians living with dementia and an estimated 1.45 million people involved in the care of someone with dementia, it is one of the biggest public health challenges facing Australia,” said Maree McCabe, CEO of Dementia Australia.

As a nation, we are living longer and more of our oldest Australians are experiencing dementia than at any other time. Of particular concern, according to the National Institute for Dementia Research is the higher death rate from dementia reported by women.

“International studies show that women are also more likely to live longer than men and this may be a contributing factor,” said Janice Besch, Director of the National Institute for Dementia Research.

“We need continued targeted research into preventative measures and treatments that will deliver better brain health throughout our lives,” continued Janice Besch.

(The National Institute for Dementia Research is part of the Australian Government’s $200 million Boosting Dementia Research Initiative and is targeting, co-ordinating and translating the Australian effort in dementia.)
