Are you eligible for Veterans Home Care?

Anzac Day, April 25, is one of Australia’s most important national occasions. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.

For those who have served our country in the military, or are a widow or widower of a veteran, there are a range of home care services and entitlements which may be claimed.

The Federal Government’s  Veterans’ Home Care Program (VHC) includes a range of services to help support eligible veterans, war widows and widowers to remain living independently in their own homes for longer.

Oxley Home Care is currently contracted by the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide veteran home care services to clients living in the Northern Sydney region, including clients living in the Northern Beaches and Lower and Upper North Shore and those living in independent villages.

Veterans Home Care is designed to assist veterans, war widows and widowers with low level care needs, helping them to remain in their own homes for longer, avoiding premature admission to residential care.

Veterans Home Care services are subsidised by the Australian Government though the Department of Veterans Affairs. There is a small co-payment required to be paid by the program recipient, which is determined by the VHC Assessment Agency.

Veterans Home Care can include:

  • Domestic Assistance: assistance with domestic tasks such as household cleaning, dishwashing, clothes washing and ironing
  • In-home Respite Care: Respite support for the primary carer so they can take a break from their caring role
  • Home and Garden Maintenance: assistance in keeping the home safe and habitable by minimising environmental health and safety hazards that may impact on you in and around your home. This could involve cleaning of gutters and windows, or clearing paths and pathways
  • Personal Care: low level support with personal care and dressing

Are you eligible for Veterans Home Care?

If you are a Gold or White Card holder living at home and have been assessed as needing home care assistance by a Veterans Home Care (VHC) Assessment Agency, you may be eligible for support.

To arrange an assessment, phone the Veterans Home Care (VHC) Assessment Agency on 1300 550 450. The hours per week and frequency of home care support will be determined by the VHC Assessment Agency.

Veterans may also be eligible for Home Care Packages and home help services through other programs if they are not eligible for the VHC program.

  1. It’s interesting that that there are so many services that can be provided for retired people. It makes sense that they would need help with things like home and garden maintenance! I’ll see how my parents are doing. They might need some home care.
